What is the Bcrypt Hash Generator - Secure Password Hashing?
The Bcrypt Generator is an advanced security utility designed specifically for hashing user passwords. Unlike fast algorithms (MD5, SHA), bcrypt is intentionally slow and automatically generates a unique random 'salt' for every hash to defeat rainbow table attacks.
How to use the Bcrypt Hash Generator - Secure Password Hashing
- Enter the plain text password into the input field.
- Select your 'Cost' factor (default is usually 10 or 12). Higher cost means it takes longer to compute.
- Click Generate.
- The tool outputs the complete bcrypt string (which includes the algorithm version, cost, salt, and hash).
Example
Inputting 'password123' with a cost of 10. The tool outputs a string starting with `$2a$10$`, followed by 22 characters of random salt, followed by 31 characters of the actual hash.
Understanding Your Results
The resulting string is exactly what you should save in your database. When a user logs in, your server reads the salt from this string, hashes their login attempt with that same salt, and compares the results.
Common Use Cases
- Software Development: Manually generating a secure admin password hash to seed into a new database.
- Security Education: Understanding how salts and cost factors change the output of a password hashing function.
- System Recovery: Generating a backdoor hash to regain access to a system where the admin password was lost.
How it Works
Bcrypt is based on the Blowfish cipher. The tool generates a random 128-bit salt, appends it to the password, and runs it through the cipher multiple times based on the 'Cost' factor. A cost of 10 means 2^10 (1,024) iterations. A cost of 12 means 2^12 (4,096) iterations.
Tips & Accuracy Notes
- •Because bcrypt automatically generates a random salt, hashing the exact same password twice will result in two completely different output strings. This is a deliberate security feature.
- •Bcrypt has a maximum password input length of 72 bytes. Characters beyond this limit are ignored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is bcrypt better than SHA-256 for passwords?
SHA-256 is designed to be extremely fast. A hacker with a good graphics card can guess billions of SHA-256 passwords per second. Bcrypt is intentionally slow. By setting a high cost factor, you limit the hacker to guessing only a few dozen passwords per second, making brute-force attacks impossible.
What is the recommended cost factor?
As computers get faster, the recommended cost goes up. A cost of 10 or 12 is standard today. It should be high enough to deter hackers, but fast enough (e.g., 200 milliseconds) that it doesn't frustrate legitimate users logging in.
