BMR Calculator
Planning a diet and need to know your baseline calorie needs? Our free BMR Calculator reveals exactly how many calories your body burns every day just to stay alive.
BMR Calculator
This is the amount of energy your body burns at rest just to keep you alive.
What is the BMR Calculator - Basal Metabolic Rate?
The BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) Calculator is a physiological math tool. It estimates the minimum number of calories your body requires to perform basic, life-sustaining functions (like breathing and pumping blood) while completely at rest.
How to use the BMR Calculator - Basal Metabolic Rate
- Select your biological sex.
- Enter your age, height, and current weight.
- Click calculate to instantly reveal your Basal Metabolic Rate.
- Use this baseline number to plan your dietary deficit or surplus.
Example
A 30-year-old male who is 180cm tall and weighs 80kg: (10 × 80) + (6.25 × 180) - (5 × 30) + 5 = 800 + 1125 - 150 + 5 = 1,780. His BMR is 1,780 calories per day.
Understanding Your Results
Your BMR is your 'coma calorie limit'. If you lay in bed all day and did absolutely nothing, you would still burn this many calories. You must eat more than this to support daily activities.
Common Use Cases
- Weight Loss: Using BMR as the absolute lowest limit of daily caloric intake to ensure you don't slow down your metabolism.
- Muscle Building: Calculating baseline needs before adding a caloric surplus and exercise calories to build mass.
- Nutritional Planning: Dietitians determining baseline metabolic needs for patients.
How it Works
The tool uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is currently considered the most accurate standard formula. It factors in weight, height, and age, applying different multipliers based on biological sex differences in muscle mass.
Tips & Accuracy Notes
- •BMR does NOT include the calories you burn walking around, digesting food, or exercising. To find your total daily calorie burn, use a TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) Calculator.
- •As you lose weight, your BMR will decrease. You must recalculate it regularly during a diet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR is the calories burned completely at rest. TDEE adds your daily activity level (walking, exercising, talking) on top of your BMR to find your total calories burned.
Why does age affect BMR?
As you get older, you naturally lose muscle mass and your metabolic processes slow down, which means your body requires fewer calories to sustain itself.
