What is the Color Contrast Checker - WCAG Accessibility Tool?
The Color Contrast Checker is a web accessibility utility. It mathematically evaluates the relative luminance of a foreground color (text) against a background color to determine if there is enough visual difference for visually impaired users to read the text comfortably.
How to use the Color Contrast Checker - WCAG Accessibility Tool
- Enter the HEX code for your Text/Foreground color.
- Enter the HEX code for your Background color.
- The tool calculates the contrast ratio (e.g., 4.5:1).
- It displays a Pass/Fail grade for WCAG AA and AAA standards.
Example
You test pure black text (#000000) on a pure white background (#FFFFFF). The tool calculates the maximum possible contrast ratio of exactly 21:1, easily passing all AAA accessibility requirements.
Understanding Your Results
A higher ratio means the text is easier to read. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) require a minimum ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text (AA standard) and 7:1 for strict accessibility (AAA standard).
Common Use Cases
- Web Accessibility Audits: Ensuring a corporate website does not violate ADA compliance laws regarding readability.
- UI/UX Design: Checking if a light gray placeholder text inside a white input field is too hard to read.
- Brand Guidelines: Verifying that brand colors can be safely overlaid on top of each other in marketing graphics.
How it Works
The tool converts both HEX codes to RGB, applies a specific mathematical formula to calculate the 'relative luminance' of both colors, and then divides the lighter luminance by the darker luminance. The result is a ratio between 1:1 (no contrast) and 21:1 (maximum contrast).
Tips & Accuracy Notes
- •Large text (over 18pt or 14pt bold) is easier to read, so WCAG only requires a lower 3:1 ratio for passing the AA standard.
- •Color blindness affects hue perception, but relative luminance contrast remains the most important factor for readability.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my colors fail the check?
If they fail, your text will be very difficult for people with poor vision or color blindness to read. You should darken the text color or lighten the background color until the ratio hits at least 4.5:1.
Is 21:1 the best contrast?
Mathematically, yes. However, pure black text on pure white backgrounds (21:1) can cause eye strain or 'halation' for some users with dyslexia. Very dark gray (e.g., #222222) on off-white is often preferred.
