What is the Tile Calculator - Floor & Wall Tile Estimator?
The Tile Calculator is a specific masonry estimation tool. It compares the surface area of a room against the surface area of a single tile (plus the grout joint) to generate an exact bill of materials.
How to use the Tile Calculator - Floor & Wall Tile Estimator
- Enter the length and width of the floor or wall you are tiling.
- Enter the dimensions of your chosen tile (e.g., 12x12 or 3x6 subway tile).
- Enter the width of the grout line (e.g., 1/8 inch).
- The tool calculates the total area and the exact number of tiles required.
Example
A 5x5 foot bathroom floor (3,600 sq inches). You are using 12x12 inch tiles with a 1/4 inch grout joint (Area = 150 sq inches). 3600 / 150 = 24. You need exactly 24 tiles, plus a waste percentage.
Understanding Your Results
The tool outputs both the individual tile count and the number of boxes to buy (if you know the box yield). It is critical to buy all your boxes at once so they come from the same manufacturing 'dye lot' to ensure color matching.
Common Use Cases
- Kitchen Backsplashes: Calculating the number of tiny 3x6 subway tiles needed to cover the space between the countertops and upper cabinets.
- Bathroom Floors: Estimating large format 24x24 porcelain tiles for a modern master bathroom renovation.
- Shower Surrounds: Measuring the three vertical walls of a shower pan to determine waterproof wall tile requirements.
How it Works
The tool converts the room dimensions into square inches. It then calculates the area of a single tile, adding the grout line width to the tile's dimensions. Finally, it divides the room's square inches by the tile's square inches to find the exact piece count.
Tips & Accuracy Notes
- •Tile jobs require a massive amount of cutting around toilets, cabinets, and corners. You MUST add a minimum 10% to 15% waste factor, or you will run out of tile.
- •If you are installing tile diagonally (on a 45-degree diamond pattern), increase your waste factor to 20% due to the complex corner cuts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I include the grout line in my calculation?
Yes. Over a large floor, 1/4 inch grout lines add up significantly. If you ignore the grout lines, you will over-calculate and buy more tile than you actually need.
What is a dye lot?
Tiles baked in different batches at the factory have slight color variations. Buying all your calculated boxes at the exact same time ensures they all come from the same perfectly matched dye lot.
